Gerund

Gerund : A gerund is a verb form, but does not act as a verb in a sentence.  In English, though a gerund is formed from a verb and indicates an action or state of being, it acts as a noun or an adjective.

Formation

The gérondif is formed like the  participe présent  preceded by preposition en.

le gérondif = en + le participe présent

être en étant

Usage

» Gérondif indicates two actions taking place simultaneously.

e.g.
•  Elle prend son café en écoutant les informations.
     [She takes her coffee while listening to the news.]
     Elle prend son café quand elle écoute les informations.

•  Fais attention en traversant le boulevard.
     [Be careful while crossing the street.]
     Fais attention quand tu traverse le boulevard.

» Gérondif may express cause or means.

e.g.
•  En faisant trop de sport, il s'est fait mal au dos.
     [Because of doing a lot of sports, he had a backache.]
     Comme il a fait trop de sport, il s'est fait mal au dos.

•  Il s'est cassé la jambe en skiant.
     [He broke his leg while skiing.]
     Il s'est cassé la jambe quand il skiait.
