What is Plus Que Parfait ?

Plus-que-parfait is the pluperfect tense in French. It is used to express an action which precedes another past action.

Formation

Plus-que-parfait = auxiliary in the imparfait + past participle of verb
ÊTRE	j'avais été tu avais été il/elle avait été	nous avions été vous aviez été ils/elles avaient été
AVOIR	j'avais eu tu avais eu il/elle avait eu	nous avions eu vous aviez eu ils/elles eu
MANGER	j'avais mangé tu avais mangé il/elle avait mangé	nous avions mangé vous aviez mangé ils/elles avaient mangé
The same rules about which verbs take avoir and which take être and about the agreement of the past participle apply to plus-que-parfait.
ALLER	j'étais allé(e) tu étais allé(e) il était allé elle était allée	nous étions allés/allées vous étions allés/allées ils étaient allés elles étaient allées
VENIR	j'étais venu(e) tu étais venu(e) il était venu elle était venue	nous étions venus/venues vous étions venus/venues ils étaient venus elles étaient venues
NEGATION
The negation is formed by placing ne ... pas around the auxiliary. e.g. •  Je n'avais pas pris mon déjeuner.     (I had not taken my breakfast.) •  Je n'étais pas allé.     (I had not gone.)

Usage

  To describe an action in the past which precedes another action:

Plus-que-parfait is used to describe something that had already happened before something else occured or before a fixed point of time. In English, the plus-que-parfait is indicated by

had + past participle

e.g.

• Elle était déjà partie quand je suis arrivé.
   (She had already left when I arrived)

• Quand mon ami est arrivé, j'avais déjà fini mon travail.
  (When my friend arrived, I had already finished my work)

  To express wishes about the past, both in French as well as in English :

e.g.

• Si seulement tu avais fini ton travail.
   (If only you had finished your work)

  Plus-que-parfait is commonly used in si-clauses followed by condionnel passé :

si + plus-que-parfait + conditionnel passé

e.g.

• Si tu m'avais téléphoné plus tôt, j'aurais pu venir.
  (If you had phoned me earlier, I could have come)
